I’m Debra Battersby, an abstract painter based in Cumbria.

After studying History of Art at UCL in London, I spent many years away from painting before returning to creative practice later in life.

​

My earlier work often began with responses to landscape, atmosphere and place, but over time my focus has shifted more towards composition, structure and the relationships between elements within the painting.

 

Working with acrylic, collage and mixed media, I build paintings slowly through layering, editing and reworking the surface over time. I’m interested in balance and disruption — how quieter areas sit against movement and texture, how colours affect one another and how separate elements can still feel connected within the whole painting.

My work continues to evolve through ongoing experimentation and the Current Work page will be regularly updated with recent paintings and new directions in the studio.
