I’m Debra Battersby, an abstract painter based in Cumbria.

My work is made slowly and intuitively, using layers of paint, texture and considered colour. I’m interested in how a painting can hold presence — whether that’s calm and quiet, more grounded and landscape-led, or looser and more expressive.

Place matters to me, not as something to be depicted directly, but as something felt. Light, weather and atmosphere influence the surface and mood of the work rather than its subject.

Some paintings are pared back and still; others hold more movement, weight, or energy. I allow each piece to find its own balance rather than working to a fixed outcome.
